ChatGPT credit score: the short answer

The ChatGPT credit score feature lets Plus and Pro users in the US connect their Experian credit report inside ChatGPT’s Finances area. It shows a VantageScore 3.0 that updates monthly, and checking it is a soft inquiry. You can then ask about balances, utilization and payment history. However, ChatGPT can’t dispute errors or move money, and OpenAI says it isn’t a financial adviser.

The ChatGPT credit score option arrived on September 21, 2026, according to OpenAI’s release notes. It adds one of the most sensitive pieces of personal data there is to an assistant many people already use daily. For some, that will be convenient. For others, it raises a fair question: what exactly am I handing over, and can I take it back?

This guide explains how the Experian connection works, what ChatGPT can and can’t do with your report, and how the privacy settings apply. It also compares the US feature with a different Experian app in the UK. Everything here is based on OpenAI, Experian and US regulator documentation checked in September 2026. We haven’t tested the feature, and nothing here is advice about your own finances.

What is the ChatGPT credit score feature?

It is part of Finances, a section of ChatGPT for money questions. OpenAI launched Finances as a preview for Pro users in the US on May 15, 2026, and later extended it to Plus users. Finances lets you link bank, investment and loan accounts through Plaid, a data-sharing service that works with more than 12,000 institutions, according to OpenAI.

The credit report connection is separate from those bank links. Instead of Plaid, it uses Experian, one of the three major US credit bureaus. After you connect, ChatGPT can display your score and report and answer questions about them.

According to OpenAI’s Finances help page, the feature is available to Plus and Pro users in the US on the web, iOS and Android. Free and Go users don’t have it, and neither do users outside the US, as of September 2026. OpenAI also says some eligible users may not see the option straight away during the rollout.

How does the Experian connection work?

The setup has two routes. You can ask ChatGPT to connect your ChatGPT credit score in a conversation, or choose the connect option on the Finances home page. Either way, you then complete Experian’s own identity check.

That detail matters. OpenAI says you enter your identity information in Experian’s form, not in ChatGPT. So Experian verifies who you are, and then it authorizes access to your credit data.

Once you connect, a few rules apply:

  • The score is a VantageScore 3.0, on a scale from 300 to 850.
  • OpenAI says checking your score this way is a soft inquiry and “does not affect your credit score”.
  • Your score and report update monthly, not daily.
  • Balances show what your lender last reported to Experian, not a live figure.

The monthly refresh means the number can lag behind reality. For example, if you paid down a card last week, the report may not show it yet.

What can you ask about your ChatGPT credit score?

After connecting, you can ask about the details of your report. OpenAI lists reported accounts, balances, credit limits, utilization, payment history and inquiries as topics. In other words, ChatGPT reads the report and explains it in plain language.

Here are the kinds of questions that fit what OpenAI documents:

Which accounts on my Experian report have the highest balance compared with their credit limit?

Explain what the inquiries on my report are and when each one appeared.

Summarize my payment history in simple terms, and point out any late payments listed.

These prompts ask ChatGPT to describe what the report says. That is the safest use, because you can check each answer against the report itself. By contrast, questions such as “which loan should I take?” move into decisions that OpenAI itself says need a qualified professional.

What ChatGPT can’t do with your credit report

The limits are as important as the features. According to OpenAI’s help page, ChatGPT in Finances can’t move money, pay bills, change account settings or make trades. Reporting on the launch also notes that it can’t file disputes, freeze your credit or change your report.

So if you spot an error, you still need to dispute it with the credit bureau or lender directly. Similarly, a credit freeze still happens through each bureau, not through a chat.

OpenAI is also explicit about its role. Its help page says ChatGPT “is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm”. It adds that answers are for informational and planning purposes only.

Is the ChatGPT credit score the one lenders use?

Not necessarily. The ChatGPT credit score is a VantageScore 3.0, and many lenders use other models, including various FICO scores. Indeed, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says plainly that “you have more than one credit score”.

The CFPB also explains that some services provide “educational” scores. These are close to lender scores for most people, but they can differ a lot for some. Therefore, treat the number in ChatGPT as a guide to your report, not as the figure a bank will see.

What you see in ChatGPTWhat that means
——
VantageScore 3.0 (300–850)One scoring model; lenders may use a different one
Monthly updateRecent payments may not appear yet
Balances “last reported”Not a live account balance
Soft inquiryDoesn’t affect your score, according to OpenAI and the CFPB

ChatGPT credit score privacy: what does OpenAI keep?

This is the part most readers will care about. Here is what OpenAI’s documentation says, as of September 2026.

Model training

OpenAI says conversations in Finances follow the same model training setting you choose for the rest of ChatGPT. You can change it under Settings, then Data controls. So if you allow training elsewhere, the same choice applies here.

Financial memories

Finances can save context, such as a savings goal, as “financial memories”. According to OpenAI, you can view or delete these at any time from the Finances home page. Our guide to deleting AI agent memory explains why this is worth checking now and then.

Temporary chats

OpenAI says that in temporary chats, ChatGPT won’t access your connected financial accounts, and it won’t use or create memories. That gives you a simple way to ask general money questions without drawing on your report.

Disconnecting

You can disconnect Experian at any time. After that, OpenAI says it will delete the underlying Experian credit report data from its systems within 30 days. Bank data from Plaid follows the same 30-day rule once you disconnect those accounts.

For a wider privacy review, our walkthrough of the ChatGPT Privacy Center and Security history covers memory, training and sign-in checks.

How the US ChatGPT credit score differs from Experian’s UK app

Experian launched a separate ChatGPT experience in the UK on August 20, 2026. That version works as an Experian app inside ChatGPT, and it shows the Experian Credit Score on a scale up to 1,250.

The privacy design differs too. Experian says the UK score appears inside its own secure experience and is “not exposed to, or used by, the AI model when generating responses”. By contrast, OpenAI designed the US Finances feature so that ChatGPT reads your report to answer questions.

Neither approach is automatically better. The UK design keeps the score away from the model, while the US design lets you ask detailed questions about your report. As a result, the right choice depends on how much you want the assistant to see.

Should you connect your credit report to ChatGPT?

That decision is yours, and it depends on your comfort with sharing data. Instead of a yes or no, here are the questions worth asking first.

  1. Do I already check my credit elsewhere? The FTC notes that you can get free credit reports weekly at AnnualCreditReport.com, although scores aren’t included.
  2. Is my ChatGPT account well protected? A strong password, multi-factor authentication and a quick look at recent sign-ins all help.
  3. What is my training setting? Check Data controls before you connect.
  4. Do I want financial memories? If not, review and delete them after each session.
  5. Would I rather keep the report separate? If so, a bureau’s own website or app remains an option.

Also, beware of copycats. The FTC warns that some sites pretend to be linked with AnnualCreditReport.com in order to collect personal data. In the same way, only connect through the official ChatGPT app or website, and never through a link in an unexpected email or text. Our guide to AI agent scams covers common tricks.

Who might find it useful, and who might skip it

The ChatGPT credit score may suit people who already use Finances and want their report explained in everyday language. It could also help someone who finds credit reports confusing and wants to understand terms such as utilization.

On the other hand, people who prefer to keep credit data with as few companies as possible may want to skip it. The same goes for anyone who doesn’t use two-step sign-in on their ChatGPT account. Meanwhile, readers outside the US can’t use the US feature at all, as of September 2026.

Key takeaways

  • The ChatGPT credit score feature launched on September 21, 2026 for Plus and Pro users in the US, inside Finances.
