AI Agent for Shopify: What It Can Do and How to Start

Shopify's own Sidekick and official ChatGPT and Claude connectors can now edit products, build discounts and automate tasks. Here's what each can do, what it costs and how to start safely.

AI agent for Shopify: the short answer

An AI agent for Shopify is software that can read your store data and take actions for you, such as editing products, building discounts or answering shoppers. Shopify also includes its own agent, Sidekick, on every plan. You can also connect ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity through official Shopify connectors. In every case, you stay responsible for the changes, so start small and keep approvals on.

If you run a small Shopify store, an AI agent for Shopify can now do far more than write product descriptions. As of October 2026, Shopify’s own assistant can change products, build automations and even generate small apps. Meanwhile, outside assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude can connect to your store through official Shopify tools.

That is useful, but it also raises fair questions. So what can these agents actually do? Which ones cost extra? Also, how do you stop an assistant from making a mess of your catalogue? This guide therefore answers those questions from Shopify’s own help pages and announcements. It is based on publicly documented capabilities; TheJusGrow has not tested these tools for this article.

What is an AI agent for Shopify, exactly?

First, a chatbot answers questions. An agent, by contrast, can also act: it reads information, plans a few steps and then makes changes in a system. If you want the longer background, our explainer on what AI agents are covers the basics.

On Shopify, then, an agent can work with your products, orders, discounts, collections, themes and workflows. In practice, you will meet three kinds:

  • Shopify’s built-in agent, Sidekick, which lives inside your Shopify admin.
  • General assistants, such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, connected to your store through official Shopify connectors.
  • Third-party apps from the Shopify App Store, such as AI chat and support tools.

There is also a fourth, customer-facing layer. Shopify’s “agentic storefronts” let shopping assistants in ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Meta show your products to buyers. That is not an agent working for you, though. Instead, it is your catalogue appearing inside other companies’ AI agents.

What can Sidekick, Shopify’s own AI agent, do?

For now, Sidekick is Shopify’s main answer to the question. Shopify’s Help Center describes it as “an AI-enabled commerce assistant in your Shopify admin.” According to that page, it can analyse store data, manage orders, edit products, write blog posts and product descriptions, and create images.

Over the last year, Shopify has added more agent-like features in its twice-yearly Editions:

EditionWhat Shopify added to Sidekick
Summer ’25 (May 2025)Better reasoning, voice chat, screen sharing and free image generation
Winter ’26 (December 2025)Proactive tips (Sidekick Pulse), app generation, theme edits in plain language, reusable “skills” and Flow workflows built from a description
Spring ’26 (June 2026)App extensions so Sidekick can work with partner apps, plus access from Apple Watch

Of these, the Spring ’26 app extensions matter most for small stores. Shopify says they let you “get answers and take action across all your tools in conversation”. For example, launch partners included Klaviyo, Loop, Smile, Judge.me and Yotpo.

Does Sidekick ask before it changes anything?

Yes, according to Shopify. The Sidekick setup guide says it “can’t make changes to your store without your approval.” Sidekick shows you the change first, and then you decide.

Sidekick also has clear limits. For instance, Shopify says it can’t talk to your customers or handle support chats. It also can’t edit images inside a theme, and it doesn’t work in the Shopify admin on a mobile browser.

Which outside AI assistants can connect to Shopify?

Shopify now publishes official connections for several general assistants. In fact, its “Connecting AI tools” help page lists a Shopify plugin for ChatGPT and Shopify connectors for Claude, Muse and Perplexity.

According to Shopify’s help pages, the ChatGPT plugin and the Claude connector can work with products, inventory, orders, collections and discounts. They can also help you set up a store. However, they ask you to confirm before making changes. In addition, they can’t edit your live theme, change store settings, issue refunds, or cancel or capture orders.

The Perplexity connector, by contrast, is narrower. Shopify says it works only with existing stores, treats orders as read-only and supports only percentage-off discounts.

These connectors use the Model Context Protocol, a common way for AI assistants to plug into other software. In addition, our guide to the Model Context Protocol explains how that works in plain English.

Sidekick vs ChatGPT or Claude: which should you use?

For most small stores, choosing an AI agent for Shopify comes down to where you already work. Here is how the official options compare, based on Shopify’s documentation as of October 2026.

OptionWhere it runsWhat it can changeExtra cost
SidekickInside your Shopify adminProducts, discounts, collections, themes, Flow workflows, generated apps (with your approval)Included in Shopify plans
ChatGPT plugin / Claude connectorIn the ChatGPT or Claude appProducts, inventory, orders, collections, discounts (asks to confirm)Depends on your ChatGPT or Claude plan
Perplexity connectorIn PerplexityLimited: orders read-only, percentage discounts onlyDepends on your Perplexity plan
Third-party App Store appsVaries by appVaries; check the app’s access listUsually a monthly app fee

Sidekick is the simplest start, because it already sits inside Shopify and costs nothing extra. On the other hand, an outside assistant can make sense if you already plan your week in ChatGPT or Claude. It can then pull store data into the same conversation as your emails or spreadsheets.

Practical ways to use an AI agent for Shopify

Below are realistic jobs that match what Shopify documents today. Each one starts small, so you can check the result before trusting it with more.

1. Clean up product listings

Ask Sidekick to find products with missing descriptions, then draft new ones. For example, you could type:

Find active products with no description. Draft a two-sentence description for each, in a friendly tone, and show me the changes before saving.

Then review each draft. AI text can invent details, such as materials or sizes, so check every fact against your own product records.

2. Build a discount or collection

Sidekick can also create discount codes and collections. So, rather than clicking through several screens, you can describe the rule: “10% off all candles for one week, one use per customer.” Afterwards, open the discount and check the dates and limits yourself.

3. Automate a routine task with Shopify Flow

Shopify Flow is the store’s free automation tool, and it comes with every plan. Now, Sidekick can also build a Flow workflow from a plain description. Usefully, Shopify says these workflows start inactive and carry a “sidekick” tag. As a result, nothing runs until you switch it on. Shopify also advises you to “thoroughly review and test” them first.

4. Answer shoppers with the Inbox agent

As noted above, Sidekick itself doesn’t talk to customers. However, Shopify Inbox has a separate AI sales associate, called the Inbox agent. It answers shoppers from your catalogue, policies and pages, looks up orders and hands over to your staff when needed. You can run it for all chats, only when staff are away, or not at all.

5. Generate a small custom app

On Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, Sidekick can generate simple apps that use Shopify’s Admin API. Still, this is the most advanced option. Shopify limits these apps to its Admin API, sets usage caps and tells you to “test the app thoroughly before installing it.”

How do you set up an AI agent for Shopify safely?

First, follow these steps in order. The same pattern also applies if you add a second AI agent for Shopify later, such as ChatGPT or Claude.

  1. To begin, open Sidekick from your Shopify admin on a desktop browser.
  2. Start with read-only questions, such as “Which products sold most last month?”
  3. Next, ask for one small change and review the preview before you approve it.
  4. Check your staff accounts, because each person’s store permissions limit what their tools can do.
  5. If you connect ChatGPT or Claude, review the data access screen in Shopify carefully before approving.
  6. Finally, keep a simple log of agent changes for the first few weeks.

Shopify’s own guidance on outside AI tools is also blunt. It says that once you share data with a connected tool, that data “is no longer processed by Shopify”. It also says: “If an AI tool makes an incorrect change to your store, then you’re responsible for that change.”

What are the risks and limits of a Shopify AI agent?

The main risks of any AI agent for Shopify are ordinary business risks, only faster. For example, a wrong price or a bad discount can now spread across hundreds of products in one step.

  • Wrong facts. AI-written descriptions can include details that aren’t true. As a result, that creates customer service problems and, in some cases, consumer law issues.
  • Too much access. So give each tool the narrowest access it needs. Our guide to reviewing apps connected to your accounts walks through a regular clean-up.
  • Hidden instructions. Agents that read web pages, reviews or emails can face prompt injection, where text tries to redirect the AI.
  • Partial batches. Shopify also warns that very large connector jobs can stop partway. So, split big edits into smaller groups.
  • Customer data duties. Shopify reminds merchants that privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA still apply when they use outside AI tools.

What does it cost, and what is “agentic storefronts”?

Sidekick and Shopify Magic, Shopify’s wider set of AI features, come with every plan. For reference, Shopify’s pricing page in the US listed these plans in October 2026:

PlanMonthly billingBilled yearly (per month)
Basic$39$29
Grow$105$79
Advanced$399$299
PlusFrom $2,300n/a

Prices vary by country, so check your own Shopify pricing page. Outside assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude have their own subscription costs.

Separately, Shopify’s agentic storefronts show eligible products to shoppers who use an AI agent; for Shopify merchants, this is the customer-facing side. Shopify says this is “active by default for eligible stores”. You manage it under Sales channels, then Agentic. For ChatGPT, buyers finish on your own checkout, and Shopify says there are no extra fees beyond your normal payment processing. However, your store must sell to US customers for the ChatGPT and Copilot channels. For the bigger picture, see our explainers on agentic commerce and Shopify and WebMCP.

Who is a Shopify AI agent for, and who should skip it?

As an AI agent for Shopify, Sidekick suits most owners, because it costs nothing extra and asks before it acts. Meanwhile, an outside assistant suits owners who already run their business inside ChatGPT or Claude.

On the other hand, you might wait if you can’t spare time to review changes, or if your catalogue relies on exact technical specs. In that case, start with read-only reports and keep humans on every edit.

A short checklist before you start

  • Back up or export your product data first.
  • Then turn on one tool at a time.
  • Keep approvals on for every change.
  • Also check staff permissions and connected apps every month.
  • Re-read every AI-written claim before it goes live.

Key takeaways

  • Sidekick, Shopify’s own AI agent, comes with every Shopify plan.
  • It can edit products, build discounts, create Flow workflows and generate small apps, but it asks for approval first.
  • Also, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can connect through official Shopify connectors, each with documented limits.
  • Shopify says you are responsible for any change an AI tool makes to your store.
  • Start with read-only questions, then small changes, and keep humans on every edit that customers will see.
