Booking Hotels in Google AI Mode: How It Works and What to Check First

You can now find, compare and book a hotel inside a Google Search conversation in the US. The booking is still with a hotel or travel site — which matters more than you might think.

Google AI Mode hotel booking: the short answer

Since late August 2026, US users searching in English can find, compare and book hotels inside Google’s AI Mode, paying with Google Pay. The hotel or online travel agency you book through, partners include Booking.com, Expedia, Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Choice, Wyndham, Priceline, Hotels.com and Trip.com, remains the merchant of record, responsible for the charge, confirmation, changes and support. Flights can be compared and tracked in AI Mode but are still booked with partners.

Hotel booking is the first big travel purchase Google lets people complete inside its AI search experience. It’s a genuinely convenient step: describe what you want in plain language, refine it conversationally, and book without jumping between sites. But the convenience hides a question every traveller should answer before paying: who exactly am I booking with?

How it works

Based on Google’s announcement as reported by TechCrunch and Skift:

  1. Describe what you want in AI Mode, dates, area, budget, must-haves.
  2. Compare options in the conversation, with details such as price, photos, amenities and reviews, and follow up to narrow things down.
  3. Choose where to book. The same hotel may be offered by the hotel chain itself and by one or more travel sites.
  4. Pay with Google Pay inside AI Mode.
  5. The chosen partner handles the booking, the charge, the confirmation, changes and customer support.

Hotel booking started rolling out in the US in English, with Google saying it would be available over the following weeks.

Who you’re booking with matters

When you book in AI Mode, Google is the storefront, not the hotel or the travel agent. The partner you select is the merchant of record. That affects:

QuestionWhy it matters
Which cancellation policy applies? The partner’s rate rules, which can differ between a hotel’s own site and a travel site for the same room
Who do I call if something goes wrong? The partner’s customer service, not Google
Do I earn loyalty points?Usually only when booking directly with the hotel chain, and sometimes only on certain rates
Who charges my card, and when? Some rates charge immediately; others at the hotel. The partner decides
Where are my booking details? In the partner’s confirmation email and account

Practical tip: if you care about hotel loyalty status, room upgrades or flexible changes, choosing the hotel chain itself as the booking partner is often the better option, even if a travel site is a few dollars cheaper.

Points and miles pricing

Alongside hotel booking, Google said AI Mode can show prices in loyalty points or miles for participating programmes, so you can ask something like “find nonstop flights using my airline miles” and see how many points you’d need. Google named initial partners including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines, Hilton, Wyndham and Choice, with more programmes to follow. Unlike hotel booking, TechCrunch reported this feature as available globally.

What AI Mode doesn’t do (yet)

  • Book flights. You can compare and track flight prices; booking hands off to partners.
  • Book everywhere. Hotel booking is US, English-language, and limited to participating partners.
  • Handle disruptions. If your hotel overbooks or your plans change, you deal with the booking partner.

A five-point check before you pay

  1. Read the rate conditions. Refundable or not? What’s the cancellation deadline, in which time zone?
  2. Compare the total. Taxes, resort fees and city taxes should be included in what you compare, ask AI Mode to show the full total.
  3. Pick the partner deliberately. Direct with the hotel for loyalty and flexibility; a travel site if it offers a clearly better, equally flexible rate.
  4. Check the location yourself. Open the map. “Near the old town” can mean a steep 25-minute walk.
  5. Save the confirmation. Make sure a confirmation email arrives from the partner and put the cancellation deadline in your calendar.

Should you book this way?

For a straightforward stay in the US, booking in AI Mode is a reasonable, convenient option, especially when you’d have ended up on the same partner sites anyway. The key is to treat Google as a very good search assistant and the booking partner as the business you’re actually dealing with.

The hotel or travel site you picked, such as Booking.com, Expedia or Marriott. It is the merchant of record, so its cancellation rules and customer support apply, not Google’s.
