AI agent for WhatsApp Business: the short answer
The simplest AI agent for WhatsApp Business is Meta Business Agent, built into the WhatsApp Business app. It answers customer questions, shares product details and prices, and then hands tricky chats to you. Meta also says it learns from your past chats, website and catalogue. You can start free, according to Meta, while larger businesses can instead use the API and third-party tools.
If customers message your shop, salon or clinic on WhatsApp, you have probably wondered whether an AI agent for WhatsApp Business could answer the routine questions for you. Since June 2026, Meta has offered its own answer: an agent inside the WhatsApp Business app that replies to customers on your behalf. Meanwhile, a separate market of third-party tools works through WhatsApp’s business API.
Below, we explain what each route can realistically do, how to set up Meta’s built-in agent, what it learns from, and where the risks sit. We wrote it for small business owners rather than developers. Also, everything here comes from publicly documented information from Meta and reputable reporting, checked in October 2026, and TheJusGrow has not tested these products for this article.
What can an AI agent for WhatsApp Business do today?
According to Meta’s official product page, Meta Business Agent can handle the kind of conversations that fill a small business inbox. It can:
- answer common questions about your business;
- share product information and pricing, and also recommend products;
- handle questions about discounts, payment and shipping;
- collect customer details, then alert you when a chat needs your attention.
In its June 2026 report on the global launch, TechCrunch added appointment booking and sales lead qualification to that list. It also said the agent can pass conversations to a person when needed. Meta spent nearly two years testing these features with businesses in countries including India and Mexico before the worldwide rollout.
In short, the agent covers front-desk work, so it answers, informs and gathers details. Importantly, it is not a full replacement for a staff member who can make judgement calls, issue refunds or handle a complaint.
Meta Business Agent vs third-party WhatsApp AI tools
There are two broad ways to put an AI agent for WhatsApp Business to work. The first is Meta’s built-in agent in the WhatsApp Business app. By contrast, the second uses the WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the API, where software companies offer their own AI customer-service tools.
| Meta Business Agent (app) | Third-party tools (API) | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small businesses using the free WhatsApp Business app | Larger teams or businesses with existing support software |
| Setup | A few steps inside the app | Usually needs a provider account and more configuration |
| Learns from | Your chats, Facebook Page, website, catalogue and uploads | Whatever the provider connects, such as a help centre or order system |
| Cost model | Meta says you can start free, and paid tiers will follow | Provider fees, plus WhatsApp business messaging charges |
| Control | Knowledge, personality, audience and handoff settings | Varies by provider; often deeper integrations and reporting |
There is one rule to know before you shop around. In October 2025, TechCrunch reported that WhatsApp had changed its Business API terms to bar general-purpose AI assistants from 15 January 2026. Consequently, chatbots from OpenAI, Perplexity and Microsoft stopped working on WhatsApp. However, Meta confirmed that the change did not affect businesses using AI to serve their own customers, such as a travel company’s support bot.
So an AI agent for WhatsApp Business must focus on serving your customers. In contrast, a bot whose main purpose is open-ended chat with the public falls outside the rules. TechCrunch also reported that regulators in the EU, Italy and Brazil opened antitrust investigations into the policy, so this area may change.
How to set up Meta Business Agent, step by step
Meta’s product page describes a short setup for its AI agent for WhatsApp Business, all inside the app. As of October 2026, the steps are:
- Register your phone number in the WhatsApp Business app, if you have not already.
- Then open Tools and select Meta Business Agent.
- Authenticate, link your account if the app asks, and confirm.
- Next, teach the agent about your business, using the knowledge sources described below.
- After that, test it by chatting with it as if you were a customer.
- Finally, activate it, knowing you can change its settings later under Tools.
For now, Meta says the agent is available to eligible businesses in select markets, with more markets coming. It also says some features may not yet reach every eligible business. So if you cannot see the option under Tools, your account or country may not have it yet.
What the WhatsApp Business AI agent learns from
An AI agent for WhatsApp Business is only as good as the information behind it. According to Meta, its agent can learn from:
- your past WhatsApp chats;
- posts on your Facebook Page;
- your website;
- product catalogues and price lists;
- FAQs, as well as documents and photos you upload.
Meta also says the agent keeps learning after you switch it on, including from conversations where you step in. That is useful, because it can pick up your answers over time. However, it also means old or wrong information can spread. If your website still lists last year’s prices, the agent may repeat them, so tidy your sources before you activate it.
Controls: knowledge, personality, audience and handoff
Meta groups the settings of its AI agent for WhatsApp Business into four areas. Together, they decide what it says, how it sounds and when it hands over.
| Setting | What it controls | A sensible starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | Which sources the agent learns from | Only current, accurate pages and documents |
| Personality | Tone of voice, and rewrites that shape future replies | Friendly and brief, in your usual style |
| Audience | Whether it replies to everyone, only new customers, or customers from ads | Start with new customers so regulars still reach you |
| Handoff | When a chat moves from the agent to you | Always for complaints, refunds, health and money |
You can also flag topics the agent should avoid and take over any chat manually. For example, Meta’s FAQ says you can tell it to always transfer complex or sensitive topics to you. In addition, you can switch it off at any time.
Practical uses for a WhatsApp Business AI agent
The examples below illustrate how a business might use an AI agent for WhatsApp Business, based on its documented features. However, they are not case studies or real customer results.
A small online shop
Say a customer asks whether a jacket comes in medium and how long delivery takes. In that case, the agent checks the catalogue and shipping FAQ, replies with sizes and delivery times, and links the product. If the customer then asks for a refund on an earlier order, the handoff rule passes the chat to the owner.
A hair or beauty salon
Suppose someone messages late at night asking for prices and availability. The agent then shares the price list and collects the customer’s name and preferred day. The owner then confirms the booking in the morning. Over time, appointment booking may also become possible, since TechCrunch listed it among the agent’s features.
A clinic or practice front desk
Here, caution matters most. The agent can still share opening hours, location and how to book. However, any question about symptoms, treatment or test results should go straight to a person. Set handoff rules accordingly, and avoid feeding the agent any patient records.

Privacy, disclosure and what to keep human
Using an AI agent for WhatsApp Business means customer conversations pass through an AI system. Therefore, think about privacy before you switch it on.
- Tell customers, because Meta’s product page does not say whether the agent discloses that it is an AI.
- Limit what it learns from, so keep private documents, staff notes and customer records out of its knowledge sources.
- Keep sensitive topics human, since complaints, refunds, legal questions, health and payment disputes need a person.
- Check local rules, as data protection duties vary by country.
Also remember that scammers imitate businesses on messaging apps. Our guide to AI agent scams also explains the warning signs. Similarly, our explainer on prompt injection shows how someone might try to trick an AI agent with crafted messages, which is another reason to keep money matters human.
How much does an AI agent for WhatsApp Business cost?
Pricing is still taking shape. According to PPC Land, Meta says starting is free, and Meta expects paid subscription tiers “in the coming months”. TechCrunch reported that Meta plans to include the agent in some tiers of a WhatsApp Business Premium subscription, while large businesses would pay based on usage measured in tokens.
However, as of October 2026, we could not find published prices on Meta’s own pages. Third-party tools that work through the API set their own fees, and WhatsApp’s business messaging charges may also apply. So check current prices with Meta and any provider before you commit.
Limitations of the WhatsApp Business agent
- It is only available to eligible businesses in select markets, and some features are not yet available to everyone.
- Also, Meta does not list supported languages or countries on its product page.
- Features such as daily chat briefings were still in testing with select accounts in June 2026.
- Meta has announced calendar management and market research as planned features, but without a release date.
- Because it learns from your content, outdated pages can produce outdated answers.
Who it’s for, and who should skip it
| Good fit | Probably skip, or wait |
|---|---|
| Small shops answering the same product questions daily | Businesses handling medical, legal or financial advice |
| Salons and services that get price and availability questions | Teams that need deep links to order or ticket systems |
| Owners who can review handoffs every day | Anyone who cannot check the agent’s answers regularly |
