AI Safety

AI safety is about making sure AI systems do what people intend, without causing harm along the way. As AI agents start spending money and handling personal data, this topic matters to everyday users, not just researchers.

Clear frameworks already exist. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology published its AI Risk Management Framework in January 2023, built around four functions: Govern, Map, Measure and Manage. Likewise, the OECD AI Principles set shared goals for trustworthy AI that dozens of countries have signed up to.

What our AI safety coverage includes

We explain both big-picture risks and practical ones. For example, recursive self-improvement risks looks at what could go wrong if AI starts improving itself. Closer to home, our piece on AI agent payments from Mastercard and Visa covers the guardrails around agents that can pay for you. We also look at privacy, such as linking ChatGPT with your Experian credit data.

Simple AI safety habits

Give tools the least access they need. Also, require a confirmation before any payment or message goes out. Finally, review connected apps every few months and remove the ones you no longer use. These small steps block most everyday problems.
